Biography
Hello, I am Caroline Budden Gibson and welcome to my website. I am an artist-maker, mother of two and a teacher. I grew up in a little village in Berkshire where my family still live. My father is the sculptor Dick Budden. He has always made a living making funny things with his hands. Whether it be giant teapots, rocks for The Muppets or ice caves for Super Man. My sister's and I grew up surrounded by artists, sculptors and art students. I supposes making is in my DNA. I feel compelled to make things. I am happiest when creating something or teaching someone else how to.
As a student I studied Art and Design at Berkshire College of Art and went on to do a degree in Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon School of Art. It was while living in London that my painting took on a graffiti inspired look. I used to travel around on the trains taking photos of the spray painted stations and subways. I also travelled to USA to seek-out urban graffiti art. I still love the sensation when walking down a dull, grey street and suddenly come upon a bright graffiti mural. An explosion of colour that literally brightens up my day!
I live and work in sunny Brighton. I love being by the sea and being able to walk through The Laines and draw inspiration from vibrant streets and funky people. It is such a colorful and creative place to live.
I have been an art teacher for many years. I have taught in secondary schools, run classes for adults, holiday workshops and even taught pre-school aged children art activities, messy but so much fun! My most important job as I always tell my kids is looking after them. They of course, are the best things I have ever made!
